Hi David, as someone who put forward the proposal for a Self Help Corporation (what a great idea!) you are cordially invited to the Kind Hearted Resources group. We look forward to your great contribution. -O
had to think of your proposal of a Selfhelp Corporation when I read this story forwarded by a friend...
Heaven & Hell, a Parable
- Author unknown -
A holy man was having a conversation
with the Lord one day and said.
"Lord, I would like to know what Heaven
and Hell are like.
The Lord led the holy man to two doors.
He opened one of the doors and the holy
man looked in. In the middle of the room
was a large round table. In the middle of
the table was a large pot of stew, which
smelled delicious and made the holy man's
mouth water.
The people sitting around the table were
thin and sickly. They appeared to be
famished. They were holding spoons with
very long handles that were strapped to
their arms and each found it possible to
reach into the pot of stew and take a
spoonful.
But because the handle was longer than
their arms, they could not get the spoons
back into their mouths.
The holy man shuddered at the sight of
their misery and suffering.
The Lord said, "You have seen Hell.
They went to the next room and opened
the door. It was exactly the same as the
first one. There was the large round table
with the large pot of stew which made
the holy man's mouth water. The people
were equipped with the same long-handled
spoons, but here the people were well
nourished and plump, laughing and talking.
The holy man said, "I don't understand.
It is simple," said the Lord.
"It requires but one skill. You see they
have learned to feed each other, while
the greedy think only of themselves."
David, nice to see you in an online space again. Ning seems nice is some ways, fairly easy to converse.
I hope you will try to connect the monetary instruments you intend for Self-help Corporations to the LETS system that is the foundation of open money. To me they seem very much parallel, and in fact it might be productive to adopt LETS as a tool within the self-help corporation. Your LETS balance would be your "current ownership share". The only issue is how negative balances are represented in the corporation governance (I would say they get a vote in all "one participant, one vote" processes and a minimum or none for weighted votes).
Also, are you thinking more or less standard corporate governance, maybe with a little creativity in the construction of the bylaws?
After reading your posts and the conversations around 3D networking I am so curious!! I work with thetransitioner in the field of collective intelligence and can smell the convergence. It is sweet! I know I don´t have the broadband right now since I am hosting the Mexico event and gardening the ning space but I will come back and jump to it!
let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to explore further
Well yes, that IS a tough question :)
I especially like your idea of a Self Help Corporation to reverse the pernicious exclusion of more than half of humanity from today's economic bonanza. I think it could well work - mainly in today's degraded urban environments.
Silvio Gesell (The Natural Economic Order) suggested a different way to arrive at a similar inclusion. He advocated a change in money to systemically eliminate its tendency of concentrating wealth by introducing a demurrage charge and a general "living wage" paid from the proceeds of the demurrage.
Of course that put him "head on" against the interests that sustain the current system, and indeed he wasn't successful, except for small pilot projects here and there.
I am a generalist interested in the limitless potential of people and the planet - trying to explain what that means is what you will find at the web site I have listed.

Best to you and yours. I hope you are well.

We're on the same page here.
By the way, I have incorporated your information in a recent article on my site:
